Time Blocking

Time blocking is something that most of us have heard of, and chances are, used at some point in our work life. The concept is simple enough: set aside dedicated amounts of time to different tasks throughout the day. We often try to set long hours, yet that is not what truly aids us be more productive. Instead, try setting 30 minutes to 1-hour time blocks or shorter, and stick to them. We know this can be hard but start building the habit now for a big productivity payoff. Our tip: make sure to block in some breaks, these are also necessary for our productivity to be its best!

Avoid Multitasking

When we feel busy, multitasking is the first thing we start to do. It is the least productive thing we can do; we’ve all read the hundreds of studies that show how much it decreases productivity. However, getting ourselves out of the multitasking mind frame can be hard. Kevin MacMillan wrote a recent article for the Northern Nevada Business Weekly outlining some easy tricks to help us. The five ideas he suggested for attacking multitasking in the age of COVID were: write down a list, take a walk, do the dishes, flip your phone over, and shutting off work apps post-working hours. These are all great tips that are of benefit when you need a break and supports us to be more present in our tasks.

Work-Life Balance

The entire concept of work-life balance has flown out the window. As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, this is causing a lot of issues for us, including a loss of productivity. How do we combat this? The last point that Kevin MacMillan brought – shutting off work apps post-working hours – is a great place to start. Try to kick off your day by doing something on your own terms; coffee, breakfasts, exercise, etc. Take actual lunch breaks. Don’t live by your computer at all hours. Remember, it is ok to prioritize family time. As a boss, make sure you model this behavior for your employees. We all need to recharge away from work, in order to be our most productive selves.

Overall, make sure you are not too hard on yourself for lacking your usual productivity. We’re all in this together and experiencing similar struggles. But, don’t let it become an excuse. Begin taking steps for YOU. Making yourself more productive, more functional, also helps to lower your stress away from work. In a time where angst is high, anything we can do to limit it is good.
