As with all industries over this past year, project management has had to adapt to the many changes and demands of our clients. As project managers (PMs), it is our job to not only adapt our industry, but to adapt based on the business environment. 2021 is going to be a huge year for businesses, including ours. In a lot of cases, it will be make-or-break. It is important as PMs that we know the trends of our clients, and how to provide them with the most impactful/effective services possible. Read below to learn 3 trends for project management, and why you need to incorporate them into your practice:

Holistic

One of the worst things your clients can be doing is operating in silos. Yet, many of them still are. This means it becomes your job as a PM to help them break down the silos to be more sustainable and effective. Utilizing holistic project management is your best way of achieving this. Why? Because it makes sure you look at all areas of a business, not just one area. It builds better communication across departments and understanding on the daily issues faced from the top down. Holistic project management also builds buy-in on changes and new solutions, so you ensure your client does not face internal or culture resistance.

Hybrid

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1611071072321{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]

The project management industry has gone through a lot of change recently. We’re now utilizing new methodologies such as agile (quick thinking, moving, etc.) project management. This is great, and it is important to keep using the new tools and tricks we learn. However, it is also important to make sure we’re not leaving all the “old” ways in the dust. As Alison Fergus points out “…project managers would be well served to explore various elements to create flexible hybrid approaches to tackling each project.” Take each project on a case-by-case basis and utilize both old and new methodologies so you can help your client have a truly successful outcome.

People

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1611071105466{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]

No matter the project management methodology you are using, you HAVE to focus on people now more than ever. Most every client is focusing more and more on people, so we need to come to them with this mindset already in place. What does this really mean though? You need to be thinking about the role people play, the processes they go through, and how you can help improve those roles and processes. Focus on how you can improve a person’s daily tasks, and you’ll find great solutions for an entire company not just an individual.

The three trends above are a few of many we project managers can expect to see this year. As we all know, project management plays a major role in the business world. Especially in the success or failure of projects and initiatives. The need for our services is continuing to grow as companies are having to adjust and adapt to new ways of doing business and demands. It is our job to meet this demand with our tools ready. We must assist clients in every industry push forward and meet new challenges successfully. We need to make an impact.
