In these chaotic times, we’re all finding it difficult to know what to prioritize, or even how to prioritize. Tools that have worked before are seeming to fly out the window during a crisis. But we also know that having priorities and order in our days is important. Talk about a rock and a hard place! To help turn our daily mayhem into order, we’ve provided 3 tips below that will help you prioritize during this (and any crisis), so you can provide yourself and your family, community and work with the best version of you:

Make a list…then shorten it

We know – this should be obvious. But when we feel overwhelmed and anxious, like most of the world is feeling these days, remembering to do simple things isn’t easy. Start the habit of writing out your to-do list the night before. This way, you wake up, and have a reference sheet for your priorities already in front of you. However, don’t let your list become a mile long. You can have a master list with a longer laundry list of items but keeping your personal daily to-do list to 10 items or less (most sources recommend only 4!) will make you more productive and allow you to feel more accomplished. There are many free list tools online you can utilize for extra help and provide accountability for anyone needing a “push.” Remember to also be kind to yourself if you don’t get to everything on your list – because as we all know, life happens!

Do something for others

When things feel chaotic, thinking of doing something nice for others is often the last thing on our mind. But giving back, in whatever form you choose, can actually ease your mind. This helps bring a relief for anxiety and stress, making you more capable of prioritizing items for the rest of your day/week. Meghann Craig wrote a recent article that highlighted the impact giving back can have. She says: “In a crisis, seize the opportunity to rise to the occasion and determine how your product or service can alleviate some of the stress in these uncertain times.” This holds true for businesses, and for our own personal offerings and strengths. If you don’t know what to do for yourself on a given day or feel overwhelmed with everything you need to do…try doing something for someone else instead. Whether it’s calling a friend, running an errand for someone who can’t, or even just posting some light-hearted content on social media, impacting the world for the better will help you be more grounded and present. And being present will then allow you to prioritize more effectively and work more efficiently.

One step, one task

This tip goes hand in hand with making a list…but is applicable to anyone, with or without a list! Starting now, continue to work on the habit of working on only one task at a time. We know it is hard, since our culture has praised multitasking for years. Focusing on one task fully will allow you to accomplish it better and move onto your next priority task quicker and with a clearer head. It is the same principle we utilize in our project management work for clients. One task leads into the next – and if you are able to fully and successfully complete one, the next one will be that much easier. During times of crisis, allow yourself dedicated time for one task. Practicing this will help build your mind’s ability to do so in all areas of life, not just work. Much like meditation, it helps you become more resilient, so prioritizing during crisis becomes easier.

The three tips above are a few of many that can help you prioritize during a time of crisis. As a bonus, the tools you develop now, will help you be more efficient and productive in the future. Overall, it is important that you remember to have compassion for yourself. We are all learning new things and having to adapt to new realities. Helping ourselves feel successful will go a long way in this – and that comes from prioritizing. Each day take one step at prioritizing one new technique. As you build these strengths, you’ll see mayhem turn to order right in front of you.
