All of us are feeling the impact of the coronavirus – both personally and business wise. With so much still unknown, and the spread of the virus rampant, it is easy to get overwhelmed and extremely stressed. While it is important to be aware and all play our part, we don’t have to be so stressed that our immune systems and lives suffer. From things that have worked for our staff, to important research, we’re providing 3 tips that you and your family and colleagues can utilize to help remain calm during quarantine and self-isolation – for your own health and for the health of our world:

Create New Routines

In a recent article on the Wall Street Journal, Jelena Kecmanovic discussed the importance of setting new routines, since all of our normal routines (work, gym, socializing, etc.) are now interrupted. She wrote “…studies have shown that planning and executing new routines that connect you to what really matters in life is the best recipe for good mental health. It is important to establish structure, predictability and sense of purpose with these new routines.” So, while we all might enjoy more time to watch Netflix, it is important we are purposeful in setting other key routines. Whether it is practicing yoga before work, doing a meditation at lunch, or calling one friend a day to avoid feeling lonely there are ways to stay engaged during this time. The many small routines we can put into place will help us feel more connected and give us purpose throughout our day.

Be Grateful for Work

While working from home has been a big adjustment for many of us (read our latest blog for tips on how to optimize this), we’re lucky that our jobs offer the flexibility to do so. This mental shift to gratitude for the work we’re doing and for having a job (as many have been laid off), helps to further provide our days with purpose and structure. Take time and pride in the work you’re doing and allow it to be a good distraction. And have patience – the world is in this together. While business may not be going on as usual, we can do our best to help it continue in as normal a manner as possible. So have patience with yourself, your coworkers, your boss, your clients, and with those struggling because of a lack of work. With gratefulness and patience, we’ll be able to remain calm, and not add our anxiety to the mix.

Ask for Help

Now more than ever it is important to ask for help – from friends, family, coworkers and professionals. It is a hard time, and for most of us, unlike anything we’ve experienced in our lifetime. Of course, we’re all anxious and stressed! But there are many tools out there to help us combat that – we just need to seek them out. For instance, many therapists are offering free online sessions, so you can get professional tips and tricks for helping calm your own anxiety and stress, as well as being able to help others. In a recent remote presentation we participated in, someone suggested sending a simple hand-written note to a friend or loved one. This act alone helps to connect you to your community. This connection, of person to person, is the most important thing that we must try to maintain in this challenging time. And you never know – the letter you send could be the exact help someone else needed to get through their day.

There are many amazing tools we can all be utilizing to help maintain our own inner peace in this difficult time. Most do not require much time or money and can be done from your home or apartment. Overall we want to leave you with this: the world is in this crisis together, and together we will make it through.
