Disconnect between employees and employers is, unfortunately, very common. Right now, a lot of disconnect is happening around a hybrid/work from home reality. Employees feel one way, and then employers feel a different way. This should be concerning for you as a business owner. This level of disconnect causes a TON of business problems, including profit loss. In the current ongoing pandemic, we can all agree that adding more business problems to our full plate is not something we want to do. Read below to learn three tips you can use to avoid the employee-employer disconnect and the business problems that come with it:

Build Trust

The majority of employees like working from home in a hybrid working environment. This is not going to change, even once COVID-19 no longer prevents people from working in an office. As an employer/manager, it is your job to find a way to honor this, while still meeting your needs. What can you do? Build trust and find new ways to do it in a remote environment when you are not “seeing” your employees every day. As Jess Bell says “Developing new ways to measure productivity and training in leading a remote workforce will be powerful tools to help foster that trust.” Think outside the box. There are so many new tools that can help gauge employee productivity. Using these will help you, and your employees, build a new kind of trust with each other. To avoid having disconnect, trust is a must.

Invest in Skills

Investing in developing your employee’s skills is a great business tool to use. As we discussed in a recent blog, it helps with employee retention, engagement, and business performance. Investing in skills also helps prevent a disconnect between you and your employees. How? Because it gives you a better sense of their strengths, weakness, and where they can perform best. It also gives your employees a chance to provide direct feedback to you. You can take this feedback and incorporate it into your business.

LISTEN
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1608663826994{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]
Truly listening to the daily struggles, frustrations, and pain points of your employees is one of the best and most important tips for avoiding disconnect. The problem? Most leaders have a hard time doing it correctly. Many find it valuable to hire an outside consultant. At QuantumMark, focusing on employee-employer disconnect is included in all our projects, because without addressing the disconnect, no solution can be put in place. As a leader, take a step back and try to hear your employees from a neutral perspective. We get it, your time is taken up with high-level business decisions, which are important. But the pain points your employees face daily are also important. You cannot change anything on a grand scale if you are not addressing the daily challenges of your employees.

The three tips above are just some of many that you can use to help correct or prevent employee-employer disconnect at your company. And the fact is – you HAVE to address it. If you’re a lucky one who does not have disconnect right now, be proactive and avoid it. Times are changing daily for us, from processes to home life, etc. Your employees are going through a lot. You need to understand this and take action on ensuring work is not breeding disconnect and ill feelings. Being proactive will help all areas of your business. Don’t we all want to span the chasm and find more success in 2021?
