Now that we have laid the foundation of why modernization is needed and the barriers you might face, the question arises: what next? How do you overcome the barriers? What steps and modernization efforts are right for your company? While the questions can feel overwhelming, they don’t need to be. We have been helping companies modernize all areas of their business for 30+ years, and today you’re getting our top tips. Below are three of the best tips for overcoming the issues surrounding modernization to become a powerhouse company, department, and state:

Plan, don’t just “try”

We cannot emphasize this point enough – planning is everything. We talk about planning in almost all our blogs, because it is the best investment anyone can make. People who have hired QuantumMark to help build their modernization plans cannot imagine how they would have reached their goals without our assistance. You need outside guidance and help. Your modernization goals are not the same as everyone else’s. Your modernization barriers are different. Your path to success is different. To know your goals, barriers, and path, you must invest the time and effort up front in planning. Don’t assume you or your team knows. The planning phase will allow you to build a thorough roadmap of how to reach your goals. This in turn will ensure you do not waste time, money, or energy on a modernization effort that will fail to meet your needs. If you only do one thing – plan.

Stop thinking siloed

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1593538591643{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]

When planning for what modernization looks like for you, it is important to not think of yourself only. Thinking and planning from a siloed mind frame is a sure way to limit yourself and potentially cause big issues. One of the benefits we provide our clients is helping map out their entire company and industry environment. From there we can determine what type of system and process interoperability should be included in the modernization efforts. What will need to be interoperable 5-10 years down the line, and how can you achieve it? Those are the types of broad thinking we bring and it is something you should be doing. The trend for interoperability and ending working in siloed fashion is already here. As Mike Miliard points out, COVID-19 has pushed interoperability forward immensely within healthcare. Our advice is this: think broad first. You can always narrow your focus if you need, but chances are you won’t.

Invest in the RIGHT technology(s)

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1593538638376{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]

Technology is, for obvious reasons, one of the biggest aspects of any modernization effort. The issue we’ve seen often is people investing in the wrong technology. You do not want to just go with the flashy new thing or the old system you know well. You need to do the work to find the system that is right for you. Our clients know that we push them to write extremely detailed goals and RFPs outlining EVERYTHING they need, because it saves them headache and financial loss down the line. It is also important to think about who is using the technology, and how you will train them on it. Do not invest in a new technology until you know people’s daily pain points. We have seen this happen and it is disastrous. When looking at investing, question how trainable is the new technology? We build training into all our technology implementation plans, as it is something that is often overlooked. Plan ahead and save yourself time and money.

We hope that, as the last blog in this series concludes, you feel as though there is light at the end of the tunnel. While modernization can FEEL overwhelming, you can see from our blogs, it does not need to be. There are three main steps you need to take: 1) Know why you need to modernize. The why is what will keep the momentum going. 2) Know the specific barriers that you face. 3) Plan, and then plan some more.
