A lot of focus has been given to the business impacts the COVID-19 pandemic brought. From downsizing to income loss and more, we all have felt the effects. But are we, as business leaders, talking enough about the emotional and mental toll COVID-19 has taken? According to a recent article on Nasdaq “Stress and anxiety are hitting an all-time high in the global workforce, with 70% of people saying they’ve hit all-time peaks this year…” This strain is being felt by leaders and all employees, and it is about to get worse again. We all remember how we felt in March, when businesses were having to close their doors, employees were furloughed, etc. As COVID-19 cases rise across the U.S. and the world again, we’re facing another round of closures, another round of peaks and valleys. Luckily, we have some good lessons learned from earlier this year on how to be proactive in coping. Read below to learn three tips you can implement now, to help yourself and your employees manage the mental and emotional strain:

Focus on Mental Health
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1606246787398{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]
This may seem obvious, but you need to start focusing on mental health. For you, for your employees, for everyone involved in your business. Build the acceptance and support of mental health into your company culture. What does this look like? Be honest and transparent with your employees. This is especially needed when there is so much uncertainty in our lives. Find ways of supporting people on a more regular basis, and build/focus on personal connections. Try to inspire creativity, despite uncertainties. It will help your employees and your leadership feel more grounded and stable.

Call Your Project Manager
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1606246857067{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]
Your employees depend on you, their leader, to give them what they need. But who gives YOU, the leader(s), what you need? This is where your trusted project manager comes into the picture. Project managers are great sounding boards. A good project manager is caring and will listen and support leaders like yourself through challenges. They have the tools and resources to help guide you to the best result/solution, especially in difficult times. You need to take care of your mental health too and asking a good project manager for help is a great way of doing this.

Lead with Compassion
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1606246903968{margin-bottom: 2.5% !important;}”]
Compassion is needed in ALL areas of our lives, including business. As a leader, you need to start by having compassion for yourself. This will let you truly show compassion, allowing you to lead your employees with empathy. Be understanding of the unforeseen circumstances your employees might have that sometimes occurs on a daily basis. Be flexible, with working hours, with time off, etc. Show your employees you care.

This is unprecedented times – and we are all in it together. From your company to your colleagues in other businesses and industries, everyone has felt the impact and the strain. It is only together, as a large community, that we will survive. Remember to care for yourself, because your employees need you, and so do the rest of us.
